Glenmont’s newest independent senior living community for active adults 55 and older is teaming up with Capital Roots, a local non-profit actively working to provide nutritional and horticultural education to all throughout the Capital Region. Capital Roots will be orchestrating four one-hour gardening workshops that will be held within the gardens at Glenmont Abbey Village. These workshops are a part of Glenmont Abbey Village’s SUN® Program and are open to residents and the public.

The four workshops will include: Organic Gardening for Happy Plants and a Healthy Garden, Maximizing Your Garden, Solutions to Common Garden Pests and Diseases, and Winterizing Your Garden. Attend “Organic Gardening for Happy Plants and a Healthy Garden” to learn about maintaining plant health, growing a healthier garden using simple and sensible organic gardening methods, extending your growing season, and more. “Maximizing Your Garden” will discuss steps to planning a garden that will flourish in limited space, how to prepare your soil, and how to create the ideal garden layout. Gardeners will learn how to identity crucial signs that indicate the presence of common garden pests and diseases and the necessary actions to prevent pest-damage during the “Solutions to Common Garden Pests and Diseases” workshop. “Winterizing Your Garden” covers soil remediation, protecting perennial plants, and techniques that will help improve soil fertility and plant health.

Glenmont Abbey Village is a 148-apartment home community for active and independent adults 55 and older. With a variety of spacious 1- and 2-bedroom floor plans, apartments include heat and hot water, a private washer and dryer, fully-applianced kitchen, a patio or balcony, and crown molding. A state-of-the-art clubhouse is available to all residents at no extra charge and features a media theater, community room with kitchen, indoor heated pool, game room, modern fitness center and fitness classes, hair salon, community gardens, and on-site management offices.

The community also offers a full social activities calendar each month highlighting the award-winning SUN® (Senior Umbrella Network) Program, the signature seven prong model designed to foster and support active and independent living. SUN Program activities, events, and services encompass topics such as health and wellness, education and lifelong learning, community and friendship, and more. The SUN Program won the gold at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Best of 55+ Housing Awards in the “Best 55+ Lifestyle Program” category last January. These awards are the industry’s only program that honors excellence in building, design, marketing, and more.

The classes will be held as follows: Organic Gardening for Happy Plants and a Healthy Garden (July 13 at 10:30AM), Maximizing Your Garden (July 27 at 10:30AM), Solutions to Commons Garden Pests and Diseases (August 10 at 11:00AM), and Winterizing Your Garden (September 7 at 10:30AM).
